Most of the time, horizontal boring mills are employed in such a way that it acts as an adapter that connects the cutting tool and the spindle. Machine spindle is responsible for generating power and set to motion that bars where the cutting tools are positioned. The bar support works in many ways depending on the bar’s length needed to complete the cut, the accessibility of the bore and level of the finish’ stringency. When the horizontal boring mill is used to create holes in work pieces, the tool is set to rotate and do the task. The movement of the work piece and the spindle depends greatly on the type of boring machine used. This technique is also used on other operation such as tapping, counter boring and reaming.
There are two basic bars used when boring, depending on what the required end result is, namely line bars and stub bars. Stub bars are mounted at the end of the spindle and are employed when the holes needed are nearer to the headstock. In the case of regular bars used for boring, the slots that were provided and placed along its length are where operators can insert flat kind of cutter. The setscrew of other cutter may be adjusted depending on the design while some needs to be placed in an accurate slot. The tool used could either have one edge or two in which case both of the boring side’s bars has an edge. For multiple cutting, additional cutters are stacked in order to do operations faster such as intermediate cuts, finishing cuts and roughing.
In order to increase the machine’s productivity, a boring fixture may be employed. This works by giving support to the work piece and make sure it is in alignment to the bar before the process of boring can commence. For milling operations, milling cutters of any type is adequate for this type of machine. End mills are responsible for creating slots, holes and grooves on the material. For surface finishing of all flat areas, the facing cutters are used. Special handling is required if circular grooves on the work piece is to be achieved. The horizontal boring mill has two structural features which are very important: working parts that are durable and constructions done rigidly. These two key features are important to achieve precision especially in a machine that operates long hours.
