Band saw blades are perfect tool for cutting curves and slicing through thick stocks. Those that are smaller in size can be able to cut or slice through a lumber that is 4” thick. On the other hand, bigger versions of these tools are able to handle cutting 6” materials. They are competent in ripping, cross cutting, beveling plastic and any kind of slicing that involves big metals and or woods. The efficiency of these saws comes from the core material used and the features provided by different manufacturers that constantly develop the specs for better usage. Some companies that make larger than usual saws of this kind do not allow installation of motors having ¾ horsepower or more. They design more of the motionless models with cast-iron frames and movable saws that can be easily stirred to other places such as in a workbench and or tabletops.
How it works
The key component of a band saw is its blade guide system. The upper and lower part will guide the sideway movements of the blade which will prevent the blade from bouncing backwards when cutting wood; which is why it is of essence that you check this first before buying band saw blades. Look for something that can easily be adjusted and can hold a setting despite of its vibration effects. Moreover, you need to consider the depth of the cut that it makes and also, its so called throat. The depth of the cut refers the distance from the table in which the material is laid up to the upper blade. The depth of the cut determines the thickness of the materials which ranges from 6” to 12”; while the throat means the distance from the blade to the saw frame which will direct the width of the cut.
Bandsaw blades can produce series of continuous cutting; which is why you’ll need to rely on its efficiency. A coarse blade is best to use in projects that needs to be done faster than it should be. However, if you are after a straight cut, use a wider blade.
Things needed for the job together with the band saw
- Tilt Table. This is a tilted table that will enable you to get precise cuts on different angles. You need to purchase a table that can easily be tilted and locked so that your work won’t have to be bothered by unnecessary complications.
- Cast-iron table and stand. This helps minimize the vibration which is a normal effect when cutting into heavy materials. It is suitable for lager saws and can also be a good help for the smaller ones.
- Riser blocks. This will increase the capacity of the slicing a board.
- Dust collection. This will help create a suction that will remove the dusts from the working space towards the bag.
