Acetylene-oxygen flames are used when metal workers need hot flames reaching up to 3500 degrees, and are the most effective for hard materials and thick metal pieces. Oxy-fuel welding was developed during the early industrialization stages and was commonly used in cutting of raw materials for the early railway and bridge projects. Today, the concept is widely used through hand-held oxy-fuel torches that perform as effectively as electric cutting devices.

Plasma torches normally generate a directed flow of a plasma jet which ionizes airflow through the torch head to initiate an arch. The torch does not have to be in direct contact with the job material to deliver results. They are suitable for application that involve computerized numerical controlled cutting.

Steel reels are revolvable devices around which lengthy, continuous items such as cable, wires and paper are wrapped for transportation or storage. Steel reels are available as simple storage devices although more advanced styles are self-winding. They are also available with live connections that allow an item like a hose or electrical cable to be used while still on the reel.  Typically steel reels are sold as individual items. Hose and cable are not supplied.  A cable reel is a reel that carries a conductive cable or lifting cable.  A hose reel is a reel that carries a hose for use with gas or liquids.  A storage reel is a reel that carries items other than cable or hose, such as paper or rope.  Live connection reels are outfitted with connection hardware to allow electricity, air, gas, liquid to be passed through it while the hose or cable is still on, or partially on, the reel.  A reel assembly includes a reel, a wire and possible features mounted on the hose or cable. An example would be an electrical cord, on a reel, with a light attached.

Materials of Construction

Depending on the application, light, medium or heavy-duty reels can be designed in a number of different materials.  Materials of construction used for reels include wood, steel, stainless steel, and plastic.  The metals are typically used for more heavy-duty applications.  Plastics and wood are used for lighter and medium duty applications.

Specifications

Important specifications for reels include flange diameter, core diameter, inside traverse, the outside diameter of the cable or hose to be carried on the reel, and the length of the cable or hose to be carried on the reel.  The flange diameter is the outside diameter of the reel flange.  The core diameter is the diameter of the interior of the reel or core.  The inside traverse is the distance from inside to inside of reel flanges.

Rewind Options

Reels have several rewind options.  These include manual or crank, electric, hydraulic, pneumatic, and spring.  In a manual or crank rewind reel no rewind mechanism is associated with the reel.  A hand crank or other manual method is required to rewind the hose or cable.  For electric, hydraulic, and pneumatic rewind reels a motor drives the rewinding of the reel.  A spring rewind reel uses an internal spring to rewind the wheel.  Features common to reels are portable and collapsible construction.  Collapsible reels can be collapsed or broken down for compact storage or bulk shipment.  Portable reels are hand transportable. They are supplied with a lifting handle.

How to Choose

First, consider the application and pressure requirements. For most pneumatic tools, you may only need a reel that handles up to 300 psi, while a reel to transfer oil would need up to 2000 psi. Grease and lubrication application would need up to 4000 psi, while a simple water application would only need up to 300 psi. Your application will also help determine the ID (Inside Diameter) requirement for the hose and fittings on the reel. Applications where more torque is needed for larger pneumatic tools or heavy repairs, larger ID's may be required.

Pipe reels are made of steel, stainless steel, plastic or wood. Most products have ports for maintaining fluid flow during rewinding. There are several basic types of reels. Collapsible devices can be disassembled for compact storage or easy shipment. Portable reels are designed to be moved by hand, typically with a handle or rewinding device. Live connection reels are outfitted with special hardware that allows the media to continue to flow while the pipe is still on the reel. Storage reels are designed to hold continuous items such as cable, pipe, paper, or rope for relatively long periods of time. Complete pipe and reel assemblies consist of a reel, pipe, and integral hardware such as a nozzle.

 Specifications and Rewind Methods

Pipe reels differ in terms of product specifications and rewind methods. Product specifications include flange diameter, core diameter, inside traverse, pipe inside diameter (ID), pipe outside diameter (OD), and pipe length. Units of measure include inches, feet, yards, mils, miles, meters, centimeters, millimeters and kilometers. There are several rewind methods for pipe reels. Manual devices require the use of a hand crank. Products that use an electric motor, hydraulic motor, pneumatic motor, or internal spring are also available. Electric motors are specified according to shaft speed, terminal voltage, continuous current, continuous torque, and continuous output power. Hydraulic motors are rated in terms of operating torque, operating pressure, operating speed, operating temperature, power, maximum fluid flow, maximum fluid viscosity, and displacement per revolution. Air motors are specified by torque, maximum air pressure, air consumption, rated free speed, and operating noise level.

Pipe Types

Pipe reels can be used to wind, unwind, and store many different types of industrial pipe. Reinforced pipe is designed for heavy-duty applications and includes pipe styles such as textile braid, wire braid, wire helix, and many other designs in multi-ply or multi-layer configurations. Coiled industrial pipe is flexible, elastic, and relatively easy to store.  Corrugated pipe contains corrugations, pleats, or spiral convolutions to increase flexibility and capacity for compression and elongation. Articulated industrial pipe is made of rigid pipe sections that are constructed with "joints" that can be swiveled, positioned, or articulated. Multi-element pipe consists of multiple pipes that are formed or adhered together in a flat, ribbon, or bundled configuration. Pipe reels that are designed for pneumatic pipes and hydraulic pipes are also available.

Pipe reels provide a lot of convenience and efficiency in managing pipes. It allows easy transferring using portable reels and it is also a safe way to ensure that the pipe is protected from any external damage. There are many types of pipe reels available in the market.
