Characteristics of the table-type Horizontal Boring Equipment
Size of the equipment – is based on the diameter of the spindle. The table-type Horizontal Boring Equipment has spindles from 3 to 6 inches in diameter. The larger sizes usually transmit more power but equally important is for the spindles not to sag or deflect when using a heavy cutting tool that is extended. The size if further specified by the table which are heavy ribbed castings that can hold loads of up to 20,000 pounds. Although each machine has a standard-sized table, special sizes can be ordered based on the requirements of the application.
Work-holding – on the Horizontal Boring Equipment is done with clamps, bolts and fixtures. The rotary tables may allow machining of all faces of a rectangular part or various angle cuts on any shape of part. Rotary tables up to 72 inches square or round can be used for large work parts that are bolted or clamped.
Cutting tools – are held on the rotating spindle by a tapered hole and drawbar on the Horizontal Boring Equipment. In order to speed up the process of changing the cutting tools, two methods can be done:
- The drawbar which pulls the tapered tool tightly into the spindle hole can be power operated so that the holder can be pulled tight or ejected very quickly.
- Quick change tooling can be used. A basic holder is secured in the spindle that has a taper in which tools are secured by a quarter to half turn from the locking collar. This allows the operator to change the preset tools in 10 to 30 seconds.
Speeds and feeds – cover a wide range because of the various cutting tools that can be used on the Horizontal Boring Equipment. Speeds from 15 to 1500 RPM and feed rates from .01 to 40 IPM are typically used.
The floor-type Horizontal Boring Equipment
The floor-type Horizontal Boring Equipment is mainly used for tall or long work pieces. A standard 72-inch runway can be made into a length based on the requirements of an application. Lengths of 20 feet are largely used today with the height of the column at 60 to 72 inches. However, this can be specialized to up to twice its height if the work so requires. The cutting tools are similar to what are used is the table-type Horizontal Boring Equipment as well as the work holding and the angle plates. The cutting tools that will be used can work on any diameter that will give the required finish by adjusting speed, feed and nose radius.
