- Read and follow the air compressor manual. Every unit comes with a manual to help guide you in operating your air compressor. Nothing stops an air compressor faster than an owner who doesn’t read his instruction manual. Always read the instruction manual because there are tips there to help you prolong your compressor’s lifespan.
- Tighten all fasteners. Air compressors are a running, vibrating machine. Its bolts, nuts and screw will loosen on a regular basis. Be sure to tighten them up once you see them loosening.
- Test the safety valve. There is a safety pressure valve installed in every air compressor. This valve opens when the compressor’s PSI gets too high. Always test the safety valves to avoid air receiver accidents.
- Clean air filters regularly. A dirty air filter can damage your air compressor. Be sure to keep your air filters clean and check them regularly especially if you're working in a dusty or dirty environment. It is also important that you use the right kind of filter. Automotive filters are not made for the high suction of the air compressor units. The filters can fail causing expensive repairs to the air compressor valves.
- Drain the moisture from the tanks. Receiver tanks collect moisture from the air it’s compressing. There are valves in the tanks that can be used to drain the moisture. It is your job to drain the moisture regularly. The moisture in the tank can cause the tank to rust from the inside out.
- Change compressor oils. There is an oil sight gauge or dipstick installed on the air compressor pump. You should check the compressor oil regularly. If you're running a compressor that uses oil you should be checking it on a daily basis to make sure that your machine is topped off. The Air Compressor oil should be changed every 300 hours of use or every 3 months. You should be changing the oil to ensure maximum functioning of your air compressor
- Check hoses on a regular basis. Hoses are the veins of your compressor so make sure check on them periodically. Hoses can become cracked or corroded and can begin to put a strain on the other components. Replace them when they are cracked or damaged.
- Clean the intercooler fins and tubes. Dirty intercooler fins and tubes cannot do their job which is to reduce the operating temperatures of the air compressor. Make sure to clean them always by blowing them off with your air hose.
- Clean the fuel tank (Engine driven compressor units). Make sure to clean out the fuel tank periodically to ensure optimal operating conditions. You should look to clean out the engine on your air compressor once every year or so to remove any residual build up from the fuel. This will preserve the life of your engine.
Proper maintenance service can help extend the life of your compressor. Avoidance is always better than treatment. If there are damages beyond your control, be sure to call for professional help from companies, like those based in Toronto, who offer air compressor service.
