Here are some drawing preparations one need to do before laser cutting or etching.
Make sure that the driver software used by the laser cutter or etcher will work on postscript files.
If you want a vector cut then the drawing should be in vector artwork for the laser to do it. The laser will only cut lines that are thinner than .007. If you just want to etch then make sure to use thicker borders or the laser might cut if it’s too thin. For ideal result, use .001 for laser cutting and .009 for etching.
If you want to achieve raster etching then it is ideal to use colors that are in the shades of grey. Remember that the darker the color, the laser uses more power. Raster etching is perfect for reproducing photographs and even artworks.
While vector etch is almost the same as vector cutting, the laser speed is faster on vector etching. Fast enough to cut into the material but not through it.
Have enough knowledge regarding the kerf and the angle of the beam when building joints.
Beam kerf is the hole left by the beam after cutting a material. Though the beam may be thin, it still leaves a kerf on every material. This is important if you are creating joints – materials that must fit perfectly. Remember that there will be some micro discrepancies in the measurement used in the drawing compared to the actual cut made by the laser. Take this into consideration to avoid building joints that will not fit afterwards. If you are unsure and needs to do this perfectly then check out some local laser cutting services in Toronto.
Beam angle should be considered when vector cutting or etching. On thicker materials, the angle made by the beam will be more noticeable though in other materials this could be very negligible.
After laser cutting or etching, remove any fingerprints or dust by using cleaning products on a paper towel or a lint-free rag.
If you think you can handle laser cutting or etching using your drawing, then the next step for you is to get a laser cutter. On the other hand, if you want this done by professionals then it is better to consult laser cutting experts in Toronto.
