- The operator should always inspect the trailer. Make sure that the trailer is in good operating condition and the hitch and loading ramps are also working properly. If the operator found any problem, it is important to fix it before operation or else he may be putting himself and others around him at possible risk.
- To make sure the trailer won’t tilt or move while loading, the operator should use wheel chocks - these are tools designed to wedge the tires in place.
- The construction trailers should be parked on a firm and level surface. Positioning the trailer on a soft surface could cause an accident. The soft surface might not be able to carry the load of the heavy trailer and might cause unbalance. Tipping the trailer on either side will cause loaded equipment to slide out.
- When loading a machine, it is important to have a spotter. Machine operators have limited visibility especially when loading or unloading through a narrow loading ramp. The spotter should stand in an angle where he can see everything but has ample room for him to escape in case of any signs of danger. Before loading or unloading the machine, the operator and the spotter should discuss hand signals to avoid any confusion. There is no room for mistake when interpreting hand signals because it might cause serious damage.
- The machine should be driven carefully while moving up the loading ramp. It is crucial to make sure that the machine’s tires are not wet and the tracks have enough friction to avoid any slippage. Only professional operators should handle the machine.
- Machines are heavy and must be parked in an ideal position inside the trailer. Choosing the wrong spot could give the operator a hard time handling the construction trailer.
- Only use approved chains when securing all equipment onto the trailers frame to prevent any unnecessary movement while transporting. Check that all the chains and binders are in perfect condition and all links are intact. Don’t tighten too much which could twist or apply too much stress on the chains.
- According to federal regulations, the Aggregate Working Load Limit or AWLL should be at least ½ of the weight of the equipment being chained. The operator should have the proper knowledge on how to calculate the AWLL.
- In order for a load to be transported without any problem, it must meet the legal height limit required by the law. The driver should make sure that the load meets the height clearance.
- The operator should double check that all loads are properly secured and placed in proper positions. Another round of inspection before transporting lessens any risk.
