The Difference between Industrial and Commercial Electrician

The work of an electrician varies according to his specialization. There are residential electricians who are responsible for the installation of electrical wirings in homes, electrical repairs including maintenance of electrical appliances; industrial electricians who are mostly employed by industries to monitor their electrical needs and the commercial electrician whose focus is towards providing electrical power for retail establishments, offices, restaurants, etc.
Commercial electrician vs. industrial electrician
The environment where commercial electrician Toronto works varies significantly from that of an industrial electrician. A commercial electrician usually works on an environment that is accessible to the public like malls, retail stores, offices and the like. Their goal is to ensure that the electrical system is as safe as possible. The distribution of power in a commercial space is different from the needs of industries because it mainly deals with 110 volts to support the needs of office lighting and equipment. Sometimes, commercial electrician in Toronto also works on high voltage systems when the establishment requires heating, air conditioning or ventilation. Wirings frequently run through conduits or ceiling rafters to make them easily accessible when there is need for maintenance or repair.
Commercial electrical wiring typically makes use of the three-phase design where there are two smaller legs running on 120 volts each and one wider leg running on 208 volts. This setup allows each wire to have less workload although a higher load output can be created when the wires work together. For example, when there is increased power demand in an office, higher voltage can be provided to ensure efficiency, electrical safety and longer lasting equipment. Commercial electrician also ensures that the wiring system has a higher level of insulation usually through high heat resistant thermoplastic that serves as protection from any corrosive liquids or gases.
Industrial electricians play a major role in industries and their expertise is more than what is encountered from residential and commercial electricians. Manufacturing plants have higher power demands than commercial establishments because of the presence of large machines and equipment. Power requirements may range from very high AC voltage to micro levels of direct current. Power transmission systems have to be made from sturdy materials and components like rigid conduits to ensure safety in the workplace. Aside from the installation of a power, industrial electricians may also be tasked with troubleshooting, maintenance work and motor color. Industrial electricians must be capable of working in different scenarios including hazardous environments.
Both the industrial electrician and commercial electrician in Toronto require the same skills, experience and knowledge in their particular specializations. The demands of the job may be different but the challenges are almost the same. They always have to ensure electrical safety to minimize the potential for fires and explosions. Faulty electrical wiring has been established as one of the more common reasons for an electrical fire but this can be avoided by hiring the services of professional electricians who are dedicated to their jobs. No matter what type of electrician you employ, you will be assured that they are suitably trained for their respective responsibilities once they show you their license.

Thanks for elaborating on the differences between industrial and commercial electricians. I had no idea how different commercial wiring could be as opposed to residential electrical. I would imagine that some residential electricians wouldn't know how to do a commercial job and vice versa.

It sure is interesting to know that commercial electricians can manage electrical systems in malls and offices so that we can be sure that our wiring will be as safe as possible. My son works as a freelance photographer, and he wants to purchase an abandoned grocery store and transform part of it into a photography studio. I will be sure to advise him to work with a commercial electrician so that he can be safe when he plugs in those enormous studio lights.
