There are a number of factors that are considered before installation of horizontal lifeline systems. The systems should only be installed under two circumstances. These are; when a fall arrest system is used or when a fall restraint system is required. Therefore is important to consider some of the conditions that require the two types of systems in order to understand when a lifeline is required. Whenever a worker is exposed to a risk of falling more than 3 meters to the ground, they need to use a fall restraint and protector. This also applies to when they are working in areas where they are likely to fall into machinery, open tanks, water, hazardous substances, and when working on unprotected edges.
The horizontal lifeline systems are categorized into two major groups. These are the permanent type and temporary type. The permanent types are installed during construction of the building and are designed to be used for a long period of time. They are meant neither to be dismantled nor removed after they are used. They are generally considered as the multi-span type and are made of strong durable material.
The temporary type of horizontal lifeline is mean for single use only. It is easy to install and remove since it is meant for temporary use only. It is generally known as the single-span type. Whenever this type of lifeline is not exposed to incidences of fall arrest, it may be removed and reinstalled in a different project for purposes of safety. It is quite obvious that the temporary type is cheaper as compared to the permanent type since it is meant for single use only. Another categorization of the lifeline systems is the customized type. This type is only installed by manufacturer-approved installers only in special projects.
