Welding know-how
Perhaps one of the most difficult processes to learn when it comes to Welding Fabrication Toronto is the SMAW- shielded metal arc welding. However, skilled and experienced welders who are used to manipulating a stinger, pop electrodes and nail welding works, can really be an inspiration to the new comers in the industry. These people make the job look so easy.
If you are new to welding, you will struggle at first but if you pay attention to the basics and master it, you can quickly pick up your pace. The five basic elements in a successful welding technique are as follows:
Current setting
Length of the arc
Angle of the electrode
Manipulation technique of the electrode
Speed of travel
To easily remember these elements, you can use CLAMS to remind yourself. If you delve into these basic elements, you can gradually improve your welding skills.
Preparation
One usually uses the stick welding technique when it comes to processing rusty and dirty metals. However, do not make this an excuse in not cleaning the metal properly. Before you weld the material, you need to clean first the material. You can use a grinder or wire brush to remove debris, dirt, rust or grime. If you fail to clean the area where you will be welding, the chances of making a good welding are lowered. If the area is not cleaned, this will result to porosity, cracking, inclusions and the lack of fusion. Also, ensure that you have cleaned the area where you will be attaching the work clamp. You need to maintain a solid electrical connection so as uphold the quality of the arc.
Next, position yourself where you can have a better view of the welding puddle. Remember to keep your head on the side and out of the smoke’s way so that you can have a good look whether you are still welding the joint and have kept the arc on the edge of the puddle. Ensure that your body posture will allow you to support and manipulate the tools comfortably.
Current setting
What determines the machine set up whether a DC negative, DC positive or AC is the electrode that you will select. Ensure that you have set the electrode according to the type of application you will be using it for. Keep in mind that the amperage will be dependent upon the type and diameter of the electrode.
