Y-strainers, also known as wye strainers, provides a compact and economical way of trapping debris from pipelines. They can be furnished standard with pipe plugs and drain connections. Some come with nipples and drain valves to allow strainer screen to be cleaned without disrupting the system flow process. A y-strainer can be made from cast iron, bronze, carbon steel and stainless steel, and other high alloy materials. Cast iron y-strainer is most commonly used in non-corrosive applications with low to moderate temperatures and pressures.
The handling capabilities of cast iron y-strainer is mainly due to the qualities of its construction material. Cast iron has a carbon content which is greater than 2% and has a relatively low melting point. It tends to be brittle, has good fluidity, excellent machinability, castability, and resistance to deformation and wear. It is also resistant weakening by oxidation and other destructions. These characteristics make it useful in a variety of applications, particularly in pipes. A cast iron y-strainer is available in threaded and flanged models and can come with a hinged cover.
Islip Flow Controls cast iron y-strainers are equipped with threaded (N.P.T.) inlet or outlet connections. Our IFC series strainers come with either a threaded cover cap or bolted cover flange that uses a flat gasket seal. They have upper and lower machined seats. Their mesh screens are standard but you have the option to choose perforated plate screens. Their drain or blow-off connections are furnished with standard plug. What sets our cast iron y-strainer apart is its generous screen area and proportioned straining chamber. This is to lessen the initial pressure drop but increasing intervals between cleaning service. And more importantly, the strainers body meets the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) B16.4. We use special heat treatment facilities with temperature capabilities to suit most requirements.
