There are two main types of boring milling machines. These are the vertical type and horizontal type. Most operations are done using the horizontal type since it can be modified in a variety of ways. The main difference between the two is the position of work piece. In the horizontal boring machines, the work piece is placed on a vertical table that revolves round a horizontal axis. Contrary to this, the work piece revolves round a vertical axis in the vertical type. The two are used interchangeably depending on the operation at hand.
Boring milling machines can be used to produce different sizes of holes. The operator only needs to change the tool head to achieve this. Smaller diameters and smaller depths can be worked on using the table type boring machines. They consume lower power and are less sophisticated as compared to the floor type machines. Most engineers refer to them as the universal type due to their versatility. Floor type boring mills can be used to produce wider holes with larger depths. They can be manipulated to fit numerous heavy industrial applications.
Most boring operations are repetitive and require high precision as well. For instance, an automobile industry needs to produce the same engine components with same specifications for a specific brand of their vehicles. For this reason, the boring milling machines have an in-built Computer Numeric Control. This enables the operator to save various settings and use them for mass production. CNC boring machines have made the whole process easier since they require minimal supervision. They are very economical and can be used to perform high precision operations. Most industries currently make use of the CNC machines to keep up with high competition. One cannot afford to do that using the old manual models of boring mills.
