There are many forms of Computer Numerical machines and these were primarily developed in order to enhance what conventional machines are doing. As a beginner with CNC machines, you need to understand the fundamental machining practice which goes with using any CNC machine tool. The more you know about these basics, the easier it will be for you to use the CNC. It is for this reason that the best CNC operators, setup personnel and programmers are also machinists. These machinists are already familiar with what the machine can do therefore; it will be easier for them when entrusted to operate CNC machines.
As a beginner with CNC machines, you need to understand the basic turning operations like finish turning, rough turning, rough and finish boring, threading, necking and grooving. You should also be equipped with the knowledge on how to process different work pieces machined.
Learn about the basics of machining practice- this point has to overstress in order to have a smooth work flow with CNC machines.
As a programmer of a machine, you need to concentrate learning in four basic areas. First, you should know the basic components of the machine. You do not necessarily have to be a machine designer, you just have to know how the CNC machine was constructed. When you understand the components of the machine, you will learn what the limitations of the machine are. Just as a car driver studies the different components to his race car in order to effectively use every part, you also have to understand the basic workings of the CNC so that you can get the most of it. You should at least know the answer to the following basic questions:
- What is the maximum RPM of the machine?
- Does the machine have spindle ranges? How many?
- What is the travel distance in between axis?
- What is the maximum number of tools that the machine can hold?
- What is the maximum cutting federate of the machine?
- What is the fastest traverse rate speed of the machine?
If you have successfully answered the questions above, you are on the track of knowing the basic components of your CNC machine. Next thing that you need to do is to be comfortable with the direction of motion of your machine. Third, you have to be familiar with the different accessories of the machine. Lastly, you have to learn the programmable functions included in the CNC machine.
