The ones who are particularly affected with indoor air pollution are the children since they breathe more air compared to adults. The average adult typically breathes 16,000 quarts of air in a day. Since children breathe faster, they also breathe more air after taking their body weights into account.
Duct Cleaning Tools
- Vacuums. Contrary to popular belief, it is not really necessary to have your own giant truck mounted vacuum in order to perform professional quality duct cleaning. In fact, in huge buildings, it is imperative to use some portable equipment in order to have access to all cleaning locations. Truck mounted duct vacuums are recommended for residential work. There are generally two kinds of vacuums which are used in order to have a successful cleaning of your duct. First is a big HEPA filter equipped air machine that generates at least 4000 CFM. This unit is connected directly to the duct and will maintain the section that is being cleaned under negative pressure in order to prevent contamination of the occupied space. A portable HEPA vacuum should also be available for contact vacuuming of plenums, turning vanes, registers and other surfaces.
- Agitation devices. There are three basic accepted types of agitation devices which are available in distributing contaminants and sending these to the airstream created by the negative air machine. First is the manual agitation which is done by means of vacuum contacting. This method will require physical access to the surface either by reaching through the openings of access or by physically entering the duct system. Next, there is different air nozzles used in blowing the contaminant off the duct surfaces.
- Pressure washers. It is quite helpful to be equipped with small portable pressure washer which generates 500 PSI on hand. This unit is being used in cleaning the coils and dripping pans in the system.
- Patching and access tools. The access openings are usually made with the use of tin snips, whole cutters as well as other devices. When finished, access opening will now be patched using reusable doors or those with screws, sheet metal, duct tape and sealants.
- Safety equipment. The safety equipments typically used includes the scaffolds and work platforms, tag out or lockout equipment, eye protection, cut resistant gloves and even breathing protection.
