A rotary vane pump is recognized as a positive displacement pump that is wet, meaning exposure to oil as a sealant is high. It is because of this oil and its tendency to contaminate the processed gas that makes the pump not suitable for some applications, unless a highly-effective filter is used.
Yet, this machine is still not ideal to use in every pumping situation. But in cases that it is applicable, the benefits it brings are many. All thanks to the oil that serves a lot of functions in ensuring that the pump works efficiently in the long run. So, how do you attain this to make sure that you prolong the service life of your rotary vane pump? Follow these four tips.
Use the right oil type
Since there are plenty of types of oil available in the market, ensure that you select the right one for your pump. This is because of a high concentration of oxygen and other reactive gases; the incorrect oil may react aggressively. Once this happens, it will create residue in the internal passageways of the pump, blocking it which results in overheating and failure caused by insufficient lubrication.
Employ gas ballast to vent condensates
Condensation due to water vapor that collects in the oil is not a good thing. In order to prevent this from happening, it helps to employ a gas ballast valve to eliminate the condensate trapped in the oil until the pump becomes warm. Do this by running your pump on zero load after the pumping operation before shutting down the machine. Performing this can help reduce the potential of corrosion.
Use oil mist filter
Since the rotary vane pump is oil wet, traces of oil as mist along the passageways are expected to be present. This is why using an oil mist filter is important to capture this undesired oil and drain it away from the system. This mist filter must be checked regularly to know when it’s time to change or replace it for optimal filtration performance.
Reduce or prevent loss of oil
Though oil that condensates inside the pump is undesirable, oil used as a sealant lubrication is very crucial for the pump to do its job efficiently. An insufficient amount of this oil can negatively impact the pumping operation and so it’s important to minimize or prevent the loss of the oil. This can be achieved through the use of the right exhaust valve that sucks back the leaking oil into the chamber.
