Helical Gear Material
Every gear manufacturing process starts with the selection of the material. A reliable gear manufacturing company can discuss with you the best options according to your requirements and application. As a guide, cast iron is commonly used for its good wearing properties. For most machine shops, cast iron is easy to machine and is ideal for metal casting. If high strength is a concern, then carbon or steel alloys are a great option.
Helical Gear Manufacturing Process
One of the most efficient ways to produce the helical teeth is by using a gear hobbing machine. Hobbing is fast and accurate in removing the unwanted parts of the gear blank. A cutter spindle rotates the hob (cutting tool) feeding across the face of the rotating gear blank. The processes create a series of cuts generating the gear teeth. The number of gashes of the hob determines the number of cuts so as to generate the gear tooth profile. Its simultaneous cutting method results in a fast cutting speed –an advantage in the fast-paced manufacturing industry.
In a nut shell, manufacturing helical gears require select material and efficient gear cutting process to ensure quality and precision. The result is a gear that can support thrust load and gradual tooth contact which transmissions can benefit from.
