A hydraulic cable cutter is among the most essential tools for the electrical industry, and other infrastructure activities where cutting steel and cables are involved. Most of these cutters are handheld making it convenient for use. But to determine which model and style you need, you must see first the right usage and purpose of each type.
These cable cutters have various models:
- Manual – the manual cable cutting tools is hand operated and meant to cut aluminum, copper, and telecommunication cables.
- Battery – the hydraulic cable cutter is also handheld but does not require any force from the user. You can just pull its trigger to do its cutting. Most models have a LED light as well which is useful if you are doing the cutting in dark places. The light is also the signal for the battery if about to run out. It is perfect for both left and right-handed.
- Remote – the remote cutters make cutting heavy-duty steel easier. It is operated with rated oil pressure and hydraulic pump. The blades of these cutters are also replaceable.
- Stationary – these cutting tools are designed for heavy-duty cutting activities especially in the manufacturing process. These are larger and held by a cable but are also operated by hand.
For the styles, we have three types:
- Ratchet – mainly, it has a long life for ratcheting mechanism; typically with the ‘C’ jaw design meant for extra heavy duty task.
- Guillotine – This hydraulic cable cutter is also called flip top or latch head (usually with no pin) and makes the insertion of the material for cutting smooth.
- Scissor – the word itself suggests that these cutters have a scissor-like handle. It might give the feel of cutting in the literal sense, unlike the one guillotine ones.
Additionally, there is a diameter measurement for each type of model and style. Do not forget to take note of that and the size of the cable you are cutting.
