Basically, a rotary vane vacuum pump is an oil rotary displacement pump. This rotary displacement mechanism is performed by the internal workings of major parts. These include a housing, a rotor which is eccentrically installed, vanes, valves (inlet and outlet), and the working chamber. The inlet valve is designed as the vacuum system’s safety valve which is left open during the entire pumping. It is the rotor and the vanes (move under centrifugal and resilient forces) which divide the chamber into two separate compartments with varying volumes. They move opposite each other which creates a centrifugal force that forces in and out the fluid through the chamber.
A rotary vane vacuum pump operates once the rotor turns and gas or fluid flows into the enlarging suction chamber and is sealed off by the other vane. The gas is then compressed until the atmospheric pressure forces the outlet valve to open. The outlet valve is oil-sealed to allow a small amount of oil to enter through the suction chamber. The oil does not only lubricate the chamber but also seals the vanes against the stator or housing. There is also another option for a rotary vane vacuum pump which is the two-stage design using a gas ballast. Its opening is being connected to the sealed chamber. Once the air is forced into the chamber, the pressure created, even at low levels, is enough already to open the outlet valve. This pump design is ideal to use for low-temperature gas to prevent condensation to occur during operation.
Clearly, a rotary vane vacuum pump works its magic by the moving rotors and vanes that compresses the gas in the chamber until it is released through the outlet valve. These pumps are suitable for a variety of applications such as in medical, laboratory, freeze drying, process engineering, and other industrial setting.
