Advantages
Structural epoxy has several advantages which includes the following:
- It allows for a rigid bonding 1 or 2 component solution
- It fills up gap excellently
- It has very high strength
- It can be used for small to medium structures or surfaces
- It has outstanding resistance to chemical
- The two part systems will require mixing
- A one part system will require heat cure
- The fixture times will vary from several minutes even up to hours
Epoxy resins
The large family of epoxy represents some of the resins which are high performing. The epoxies generally outperform the other types of resins when it comes to the resistance to degradation brought about by weather or environment as well as great mechanical properties. Because of these characteristics, they are almost use exclusively when creating and repairing aircraft components. As a laminating resin they have a significantly high adhesive property and a high resistance to water degradation. These properties make the epoxy resin ideal for the use in application like building boats. When creating boats, epoxies are usually used as the primary material for construction or at times a secondary application to replace water degraded resins or sheath a hull. They are also used to gel coats.
The term epoxy refers to a group of chemical which consists of an oxygen atom that is bonded to two carbon atoms which are already bonded. The simplest epoxy structure is a ring structure with three members and is called alpha-epoxy or sometimes 1,2 epoxy.
