Gears have the most intricate designs which makes gear manufacturing a complex process to perform. Consider the following factors that will affect the quality of your gears during the manufacturing process:
Design
Gears have intricate and complex designs and manufacturing them requires high levels of precision, expertise and state-of-the-art equipment to avoid errors.
Material
Gears are designed to work for a longer period of time. So, it is essential that the right material should survive the normal wear and tear of most mechanical parts. Moreover, materials should meet the following requirements:
- No grain growth during high temperature carburizing
- Low and stabilized quenching distortion
- Well-controlled hardenability
- Good formability
- Least non-metallic inclusions
- Consistent and high machinability
Processes
When it comes to gear manufacturing, different process dynamics are used to achieve the required specifications of gears. Here are the two types of process dynamics:
1.Soft Gear Process Dynamic
During this process, gear teeth are formed by gear shaping or hobbing. Then soft finishing is employed using grinding or rolling. Remarkably, this process keeps the quality of your gear according to your specifications even after the heat treatment.
2.Hard Gear Process dynamic
In this process, the gear teeth are shaped or rolled after heat treatment in final finishing operations which could be hard finishing or grinding.
It is important to note that several factors might affect the quality of gears which include cutters, work fixture, machined blanks, arbors, and cutting parameters.
