Window shutters, in some form or another, have been used even long before windows have been made. The early versions of custom shutters in Toronto were meant to cover an opening in the wall to protect the interior of the homes from the harsh weather elements. Since window glass became a popular window material in the country, it changed the way shutters are utilised and manufactured. They were no longer required to protect homes from intruders or animals, but they were intended to provide protection for expensive window glass panes.
However, as the quality of window glass had improved, protection became less of a concern and had now turned to serve more as a decorative element. In fact, well-designed and well-placed custom shutters in Toronto can be a great finishing touch and many home designs seemed to be incomplete without them. On the other hand, poorly-chosen and installed window shutters can destroy a home’s curb appeal and value.
This is why shutter size and placement is one particular consideration that should never be missed when you are considering to have custom shutters in your Toronto home. Obviously, shutters would not be a good option if your house does not have enough room for them. This is the case if your window comes too close to a corner that can make the shutters stick out far beyond the edges. In case your house has a siding, the shutters should not come overlapping the corner board.
Moreover, if your windows come too close together, installing custom shutters can also be difficult as there should be some space between each shutter on the adjacent window, at the minimum half the width of a shutter. And so, the size of the window or windows is what determines the height and width of the custom shutters you want to install on top of your windows.
